plot summary

In “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream,” by Scottish author Ken MacLeod, a man is abducted and taken to a mysterious island where he is forced to participate in a bizarre game. The man has no mouth, so he must scream. If he screams too loudly or for too long, he will be killed.

The game is played by the other participants on the island, who are all eager to silence the screaming victim. In order to make sure that he doesn’t scream too much, the man is continually drugged. He never knows when the drug will wear off, and so his screams become increasingly desperate.

The man gradually realizes that the other players are also playing a game with him–a game of psychological warfare. They are trying to drive him mad until he breaks and screams uncontrollably.

The man eventually escapes from the island and tells his story to a psychiatric hospital. He has lost all sense of self-identity–he’s just one more patient in a ward full of screaming lunatics.

When she was just sixteen years old, Sarah J. Mass wrote a short story that would change her life. Titled “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”, the story follows a woman who is strapped to a metal table and has electrodes inserted into her brain in an attempt to suppress her violent impulses.

Mass’s story would later be adapted into the award-winning psychological thriller film, I Spit on Your Grave. Since its release in 1978, the film has been banned in numerous countries, earning it the reputation of being one of the most controversial films ever made.

Now in her seventies, Mass continues to write both fiction and non-fiction. Her latest book, The Boy Who Couldn’t Stop Worrying, tells the story of a young man plagued by anxiety and OCD from infancy.

Mass’s work has received critical acclaim, with many praising her for her ability to explore complex psychological themes without resorting to melodrama or sensationalism.

So what does this have to do with I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream? Quite a bit actually. For starters, consider that Mass’ writing career began with a short story about a woman whose violent impulses are suppressed – something that is strikingly similar
